The Hottie Stop interviews Yvette Yates, star of In The Blood

04.14.2014by: Eric Walkuski

Yvette Yates is a beautiful up-and-coming actress from El Paso with films such as EL GRINGO, SORORITY PARTY MASSACRE, I HOPE THEY SERVE BEER IN HELL and WITHOUT MEN to her credit. Right now she can be seen starring alongside Gina Carano in the action thriller IN THE BLOOD, in which Yvette plays a nurse who gets on the former MMA fighter's bad side, and later this year she'll be appearing in Paul Thomas Anderson's INHERENT VICE, which is very cool indeed.

I recently spoke to Yvette - who is incredibly sweet - about IN THE BLOOD, what it's like being roughed up by Carano, her sweet tooth, and the fact that she was almost a scientist. No, really!

How did you get involved with IN THE BLOOD?

I actually auditioned for two different roles and I got the Nurse Leta one, it was so much fun. Knowing I was going to work with Gina and Cam was [Gigandet] great. And Danny Trejo and Luis Guzman, I was like, oh my god this is going to be amazing. We shot in Puerto Rico and we had a blast.

Did you have some fun nights out on the town in Puerto Rico?

Well Gina is in pretty much every single scene, so she was always working, like every single day. I did get my days off and got a taste of the city, which is beautiful. We had a few nights… And of course there was the wrap party, which was a really good time.

In one scene, Gina gets a little rough with you. What was filming that like, is she as strong as she looks?

We had a conversation about it, me, her and John Stockwell the director, we wanted her to be just as badass as she is with a guy, not just a little push. We tried it different ways, in one version she threw me over her shoulder, which she did with such ease. The next day I woke up and was like, why am I so sore? From my chin to my chest. It didn't even hurt on set, but I felt it the next day, the strength in her arms is unbelievable.

So you're saying you don't think you could take her in a fight?

You know, I don't think so! (Laughs) I think she could take out everyone. She's so amazing, we had a lot of fun.

Do you think you could kick some ass the way she does in a movie?

I think so! I shot EL GRINGO with Scott Adkins, and while I didn't get to do a lot, I did some pushing and throwing, and thought it was so much fun. Just to do all of that and get ready for it is a challenge in itself.

When you're in production do you have a sturdy training regimen that you stick to?

I always try to eat healthy, but maybe that's because I have a big sweet tooth. I'm definitely a gym-aholic, I'm at the gym five days a week. I definitely increase it when I'm shooting, though.

So your "cheat" food is chocolate?

It is, dark chocolate. It's like, anything else I can say no to, but if I see something with dark chocolate, I must have it.

You're from Texas, right? Are you a barbecue expert?

Of course! I love food, I love cooking. That's why I have to go to the gym, because I'm one of those actresses who eats. (Laughs)

What's your signature dish when you cook?

I really love cooking my mom's food, there's nothing like it anywhere else. The soups, the meats, the tortillas, everything. I love all food, but Mexican is definitely a comfort food.

You've been in a handful of action and horror movies recently, are you a fan of those types of films?

I feel lucky because I've been able to do them, each set has a different energy. I really respect the crews, without them it wouldn't happen.

What's your dream project?

I love a good script, I don't want to limit myself. I'd love to be the female lead in a film that showcases a bit of everything. It seems to be happening more and more these days, all of these actresses carrying these big films. There are so many possibilities.

I read that you studied physiological science in school, does this mean you were almost a scientist?

(Laughs) I was. I was going to apply to medical school, but I really wanted to be in the entertainment industry. I just didn't know how. I thought, how am I going to tell my parents? It took me about four months before I told them that I wasn't going to apply to medical school. I just knew acting was my dream and passion, and I didn't know how I was going to do it, but I was going to do it. Mostly they were supportive of it.

That's always a plus.

It was, we're a really close family. My sister is a lawyer, my brother's a dentist, so they're covered.

And you're the famous one.

(Laughs) Exactly. I always tell them to come to the premieres. It's a lot of fun when they come to visit, and I get to share that with them because it's a whole different world.

Do they like the movies you star in? Some of your movies are very R-rated.

They like the happier ones, they liked EL GRINGO, except for the love scene. And WITHOUT MEN, which is a comedy with Eva Longoria.

(Laughs) Somebody's killing sorority girls, no they don't have to watch that one.

What are some of your hobbies?

I'm always doing something outdoors, like hiking. I spend time with my family. I'm always reading scripts. I just started shooting another film called BLOODSUCKING BASTARDS, it's a comedy vampire film.

That's the best title ever.

I read that you're in Paul Thomas Anderson's INHERENT VICE.

Yes, but mum's the word for now.

That must have been awesome.

You're not going to tell me anything about it, huh?

(Laughs) I'm smiling from cheek to cheek right now. Yeah, I'm very happy about that.

Who is your celebrity crush?

Robert Downey Jr. I don't know why, anything he's in. I love that he had a comeback, he's like a chameleon, he can be anything he chooses. Anything he does, I'm there.

Thanks so much and good luck with everything!

Thank you!
