The Hottie Stop interviews musical artist Sabryna

07.10.2017by: Eric Walkuski

Sabryna isn't your conventional pop artist. For starters, how many musicians do you know who give out their phone number publicly? Or attempt to eat 50 hot dogs on YouTube? Sabryna is thinking outside the box, and that's what makes her so cool.

Hailing from New Zealand, Sabryna is trying to make an impact in a crowded music field. She's smart, funny, and talented, and chances are we'll be hearing a lot from her quite soon. In the below interview, we talk about her passion for music, her thoughts on moving to the U.S., her dream collaborations and more!

When did you first discover your passion for music?

I fell in love with music when I was super young. I would put on shows for anyone who would watch; my parents couldnít have their friends over without me singing for them! I started singing lessons when I was 11 years old, and my teacher became my mentor. I ended up going on tour when I was only 12 around the north island of New Zealand, and thatís when I knew I wanted to do this as a career.

Who was your favorite artist growing up, who inspired you the most?

My first obsession with an artist was Christina Aguilera. Nobody sings like she can. I would practice doing her vocal runs and practice trying to sing like her. I have followed her career from the very beginning. Also Alicia Keys was a huge part of my life growing up. She was the first concert I ever went to. Both of them are amazing, strong female vocalists.

Who is the one singer or producer you'd kill to collaborate with?

Diplo and Justin Bieber.

You're originally from New Zealand - how long have you been living in the U.S.? Did you experience any culture shock when you came to the states? From what I can tell you don't have a strong accent.

Iíve been in the US almost five years now. It was definitely a bit of culture shock. Especially LA! I had to get used to the fast-paced lifestyle and the dog-eat-dog mentality people have here. The culture is very different in New Zealand. Itís a lot more relaxed, but my mom is American, so I grew up constantly hearing her accent, therefore when I moved here, I picked it up really easily. But donít worry, I can switch back to my kiwi accent in a heart beat!

Do you go back to New Zealand often?

I havenít been back in few years to be honest. My parents just moved from New Zealand to the Cayman Islands, so I no longer have to travel there to visit them. I really miss home though, and hope I can go back soon. Hopefully I can go on tour there. My dream is to sing at the Spark Arena in Auckland.

You do these "Try It Challenges" on your YouTube page, inspired by your song. What made you want to do these crazy things, like covering your face in rhinestones or seeing how many hot dogs you can eat in 30 seconds?

Oh my gosh, weíve had way too much fun filming these Try It Challenges! Honestly I just wanted to do something out of the box for my fans and have fun. My favorite challenge was the rhinestones covering my faceÖ we could not stop laughing. I looked so ridiculous, and the glue was stuck on my face for days! I could not get it off. My poor skin!

Speaking of food, what are some of your favorites?

Pepperoni Pizza will forever be my fave.

What are your hobbies?

Does Netflix count as a hobby? When Iím not working, Iím watching reruns of One Tree Hill on Netflix.

What's your ultimate goal, career-wise?

To tour the world, continue making music with awesome people and to stay connected with my fans.

That sounds good. Thank you so much for your time!
