It always seems like it’s the most beautiful girls who say they were totally not cool in high school. Case in point, Marie Avgeropoulos - the lovely and talented young star of the action film TRACERS and the popular CW series The 100. Ms. Avgeropoulos claims she was a tomboy who sported a shaved head and would wear dog collars in her teen years, which, I dunno, actually does sound kind of cool to me. Regardless of her status then, Marie is certainly one of the cool kids now, and rocking a much different look.

Still, Marie hasn’t left her rebellious roots behind; she seems intent on tackling action-packed roles that put her in peril and enable her to flex her muscles. (As she says, she wants to tackle roles that call for her to kick ass and take names.) For TRACERS, she trained in the fine art of parkour for months before filming, and you can see the work ethic paid off during the finished product. (Her ex-boyfriend Taylor Lautner is the lead in the film, but you won’t be paying him much mind during it.)

I recently spoke to Marie about her shaved head years, her love of extreme sports, how her life has changed thanks to The 100 and potentially being typecast as “the bad girl.”

This is a pretty physical role; was that part of the appeal of the project for you?

I’ve always been an adrenaline junkie, and I love action movies, but I’d never heard of a movie using parkour as a way to pull off heists and escape the cops, so as soon as I heard that concept I thought it was really different. I was really excited to be a part of it.

Is your character a good girl or a bad girl?

I would describe Nikki as a tomboy, she’s the only girl in the group. She finds herself very conflicted with what her heart wants, and she also lives in a place of fear of Adam Raynor’s character could possibly do to her. When she meets Cam and he softens her up a little, she realizes there is a way out of this.

In what ways are you like Nikki?

I’m like Nikki in a lot of ways. I’ve been a tomboy myself almost all my life. When I was in high school I had a shaved head and would wear clothes ten times my size and cover up every part of my body. I’d wear a dog collar around my neck and would skateboard to school. Definitely was not a cool kid growing up. But I’m totally the same way now, I’m not into things that are considered girly activities, like playing my drums, riding my motorcycle, and anything that could be considered extreme sports. If it’s getting your heart-rate up, I’m generally the first one to sign up for it.

Would you ever consider shaving your head again?

Yeah, I actually did it again six or seven years ago, before it was even a thing. Now all these girls are shaving the sides of their heads, it’s no big deal. I did it seven years ago and my agents weren’t too pleased, they were like, “You have to try to get a job, why do you look like that?” [Laughs]

Maybe you can be in the next Mad Max movie.

Right? I can’t wait to see it.

Did you get hurt at all during Tracers?

I feel like anything involving extreme sports you can get hurt, it just happens. I don’t think I’ve ever been on a set where I didn’t leave with bruises all over me. Mind you, I bruise like a peach, flick me and I’ll have a bruise. But we trained for months beforehand; it was a lot of fun because we all trained together. We really had no idea how to parkour before that, it was really wonderful that we got to work together in a parkour gym before get went and filmed Tracers.

Are you just parkouring all over the place now?

[Laughs] I’ve actually used some of the stuff I learned on the series I’m on, The 100.  I play a warrior named Octavia and anytime we’re running through the woods and anytime there’s an overturned tree I make sure to parkour over it. I’ve been able to use it quite a bit.

Do you enjoy being on a TV set more than a movie set?

The really cool thing about being on a successful show is you always have a job to go back to. [Laughs] As actors, we always thank our lucky stars for that opportunity. The 100 only films six months out of the year, so during my off time I get to travel, go fishing, spend time with family, and also bang out a couple of films, which is nice. It’s the best of both worlds.

How has being on a popular TV show changed your life, if at all?

It has changed my life, because it’s been really humbling for me to see all these fans all over the world, the entire 100 fandom. I know I can speak on behalf of the entire cast when I say it’s been really amazing to see some of these people; they’re doing paintings of your character, they’re doing their hair like your character. There’s even been people getting tattoos! That’s a commitment. I don’t even dye my hair, so for someone to go get a tattoo of something involving The 100... it’s pretty wonderful that they’re that into it.

What’s your dream project?

I just want to keep doing different and challenging roles and continue to flex my acting muscles. I want to keep telling truthful stories, ones that touch and effect other people. I’d love to do a fantasy movie, that would be fun. And more action roles, those are so much fun for me, when I can learn some new skills like parkour. Just run around and kick ass and take names, that makes me a happy girl. [Laughs]

Are you a workout junkie?

I am a workout junkie, for sure. Mostly because a) it keeps me sane, and b) part of the M.O. of an actor is you’ve gotta stay fit. I love playing sports with friends and running around in the summer; I love staying active, it’s good for the mind.

What are some of your favorite TV shows?

Oh, I loved The Sopranos. I binge-watched Breaking Bad. Recently I binge-watched Orange is the New Black.

I know you weren’t a kid actor, you started out a little late, so to speak. What got you into it?

I lived in Ontario for 21 years of my life, and then I moved to Vancouver after I graduated from Television Broadcasting, because I thought I wanted to be a journalist until I realized once I became one I’d just have to tell people bad news every day.  I was like, wow, this is kind of depressing. My creative side was calling me and I wasn’t quite sure what I was doing, and one day I was playing drums in Vancouver and an agent scouted me and approached me and asked me if I wanted to get into it. And now here I am!

It must be surreal to have the course of your life change so abruptly.

Yeah, I was in my early 20s and while I’m not in my early 20s anymore, I can still say every day is a learning experience, trying to figure it out. I’m really happy with the way it turned out for me, it’s just been really fulfilling.

Are you still based in Canada?

I don’t really know where I’m based, honestly. [Laughs]

Are you a nomad?

Exactly, I’m a gypsy nomad. These are wonderful problems to have, I’m by no means complaining, but I’m always living out of my suitcase and sort of crashing everywhere. I’ve been blessed to be working so much.

What has been your favorite experience in this business?

That’s so hard for me to pick because all the characters I’ve played have been so close to me, they’ve all been wonderful experiences. Meeting all these great actors that I’ve worked with and learned from. I just recently shot two independent films and those were great, so different. One is called Numb, about these four people on a gold hunt and how greed really affects them. The other is called Isolation, and in it Dominic Purcell and I play pirates who rob people. So they’ve all been really fun and different. I get to play the bad girl again in both.

Are you getting typecast as the bad girl?

Well, they’ve all been really different from one another. I’m generally up to no good, but I don’t want to play them all the same. But I don’t know, maybe that says something about me. There’s a bit of a dark side to me sometimes, so maybe it’s easy for me to play into that.
