Standing at an imposing, and very pleasing, 5 feet 11 inches, Kristanna Loken is undoubtedly one tall drink of water. The bright blond locks and supermodel good looks further cement her as an unforgettable vision. Loken has been working in the entertainment industry since she was a teenager, both as actress and model, but she really burst onto the scene in 2003 with her turn as the villainous cyborg T-X in TERMINATOR 3: RISE OF THE MACHINES. Since then, she's been seen in both film and television, with such titles as BLOODRAYNE, MERCENARIES, The L Word, Painkiller Jane and Burn Notice to her credit.

Her latest role finds her kicking ass (once again) as an L.A. cop hunting a killer in Moscow in the thriller BLACK ROSE, directed by former superstar bodybuilder Alexander Nevsky. Obviously, Kristanna is no stranger to playing an ass-kicker; how she feels about that is discussed in the below interview. Other topics include her character in BLACK ROSE, her upper New York origins, moving behind the camera, and getting down-and-dirty (you'll see).

You're from upstate New York originally?

I am from near the Hudson area. My parents had an organic fruit farm up there for 43 years. They sold it in 2012, it's still in operation. They had a gourmet roadside market and bakery and petting zoo; it was a real summer family destination.

Did you still visit a lot when it was operational?

Oh yeah, I was there often. We actually shot a film there called Fighting for Freedom that my dad wrote. I produced and starred in it, it was a story that was very near and dear to our hearts, about one o the Mexican migrant families that did work on our farm. Bruce Dern played the role of my dad, we shot on our farm and around Hudson; it was really an incredible experience. To be sharing an experience like that with my father on the farm, working with Bruce Dern, who is such a legend. So many wonderful things. They sold the farm the following year, so it really immortalized it before the sale.

Moving on to Black Rose, what can you tell me about getting involved with the film and your character?

Alexander Nevsky had apparently been a fan of mine. I first met him back in 2003 when we were premiering Terminator 3, and he wanted to work with me and has become a prolific actor and producer in his own right. I really enjoyed his vision for the film and the characters. We ended up shooting it in Moscow, my portion of it. He's just a wonderful host to his city, and he brought my dad which was just awesome.

What I really liked about my character Emily is she's this new police profiler brought on to the case and she forms this bond with Nevsky's character, even though he comes from a completely different world. They kind of school each other in their own ways. She's really effected by the loss of humanity that she experiences while on this case. I think Emily has this great love of humanity and human nature, and that's why she becomes this co-pilot to stop these killings.

You get to kick a lot of ass in this, do you enjoy shooting action sequences?

I've done a lot of action in my career, I think more often than not I've got a gun in my hand, or some sort of weapon. [Laughs] I think it's a genre that found me. I'm almost six feet tall, I've always been outdoorsy and athletic, so that kind of down-and-dirty thing is very much a part of who I am. What I look for when I watch action is, women who I believe are actually carrying out the action they're doing. I always try to come into things as authentically as possible. I actually had trained with the L.A.P.D. when I was doing Terminator 3 and I got really comfortable with the Smith and Wesson Colt 45 that I used in that film. I have so much respect for law enforcement, so I felt very honored to play this police profiler in the L.A.P.D.

Did you think when you were first starting out, modeling and all that, that you would eventually become known as this badass and get cast in these kinds of roles?

I actually started out acting before I became a model. My very first job was in the city on a soap opera called As the World Turns, that was the beginning. From there I had been approached to do some modeling, my mother had been a very successful model, and I thought, "I live in New York City, the modeling capitol of the world, why not give it a shot?" It was never really my thing, I always preferred acting. Life just never ceases to amaze me. I don't know if you've ever heard the expression, "If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans"? That's very much my life, so if anyone had told me I'd be this kind of action actress... I probably would have said, "Why not?" [Laughs]

Is there a genre of movie you haven't done yet that you'd like to?

My favorite has been dramatic roles, I really enjoy doing straight dramatic roles, and I've been fortunate to do quite a few of those. I'd like to explore some more comedy, I've done some but I'd certainly like to do more.

I know you've been a producer on a few films and television shows, is that something that you'd like to move further into?

Absolutely, and as a matter of fact I'm launching a production company right now called Trio Entertainment. I really wanted more overall control in the content of film and TV that I am a part of, and really creating these opportunities. We've got 10 films on our plate and a TV series, so I'll definitely be doing more producing. I would also really like to try my abilities at directing.

If you weren't an actor, what would you be doing?

Archeology. I've always been interested in archeology and paleontology and the study of where life comes from. And talking about being down-and-dirty, literally being down in the dirt in a far off land, that actually sounds really appealing to me. [Laughs]

That does sound awesome! Thank you again for your time, and good luck with the new venture coming up.

Thank you, it was my pleasure.

Matured Nicely

Kristanna Loken is one of the many women that Hollywood had no idea how to develop. So they took the easy way out and made her the amazon-woman. Too bad they didn't have a desire to make a Wonder Woman film--Loken would have been great in it.

Smith & Wesson Colt 45?

Kristanna, make up your mind! Was it a Colt or a S&W?
That quibble aside, I loved her in both Painkiller Jane and T3. Nice to look at and engaging in her roles.
