The Hottie Stop interviews Brittany Ishibashi from TMNT: Out of the Shadows

06.06.2016by: Eric Walkuski

If TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES villain Karai looks a little different in OUT OF THE SHADOWS, there's good reason for it. The actress who played the character in the 2014 TMNT reboot has been replaced by the lovely Brittany Ishibashi... and dare we say it's an upgrade (just like everything else in the new Turtles adventure). Ishibashi has been in showbiz since 1999 and has worked steadily in television and film since then. She does appear to have been born to be in entertainment, however, as her father is a respected concert promoter and her mother is a singer; her two sisters are actresses and writers as well. Talented family, this is, with Brittany being the most recognizable of the bunch right now.

Right before the release of TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: OUT OF THE SHADOWS, I spoke to Brittany about how excited she was to join the world of Ninja Turtles, the training she had to go through for the film, whether or not she could be a crime-fighter herself and her upcoming collaboration with her siblings.

How excited were you to nab the role of Karai? Because you replaced the actress who was in the last film, can you talk about the process of stepping in for her?

This film is a different iteration I guess. When I first went up for the role of Karai, it was billed as a very generic female soldier. I had an inkling it was Karai, but they were really secretive about it, so I was really ecstatic, not only when I booked the part, but I when I realized who I'd be playing.

You're a big Ninja Turtles fan?

Huge, that was what I grew up on. The movies, obviously, I wore out the VHS. I even had shoelaces with them on it. I love the Turtles, I was always Leo.

What do you think it is about the Turtles that have kept them going so many years?

I think it's that they're brothers, and everyone can kind of see themselves in one of the Turtles. They're goofy and they make mistakes, but they keep on going and they're just a lot of fun. I think the great thing this movie does is it brings so much of their relationship to the forefront. It's really well done.

Who wouldn't want to be a perpetual teenager who eats pizza and kicks ass?

I mean, that would be a dream. [Laughs]

Are you a geek at heart? What else do you geek out about?

I've always loved comics, I've always loved cartoons. I'm on this Japanese Magic of Tidying-Up kick and now they're on the section where they say to get rid of your books. The rule is, only hold on to things that spark joy, and I'm like, "Every one of these brings me so much joy!" Each book I touch I say, "You bring me so much joy, book!" Nothing beats the feel and smell of books. When I was younger my library card was my most prized possession.

Were you a nerdy kid growing up?

I was the nerdy drama music kid. I was spending my time in the choir room or doing skits in the drama room. I never ventured out to the quad where the cool sports people were, I was always reading plays and trying new harmonies on old musical theater songs. [Laughs]

Were you bit by the acting/performing bug early?

Oh, absolutely, I was born into a performing arts family. My father's a concert promoter, my mother's a singer and they brought me and my sisters in to assist in promoting at a very young age, and just being around that energy of putting on a show was kind of addictive. We kind of had no choice but to pursue careers in the arts, not because they were forced on us, but because it was so intoxicating. I threw myself into musical theater and then just kind of kept working, putting one foot in front of the other. Someone asked me the other day what I would be doing instead and I just paused for a second and thought, what is my skill set? [Laughs]

Talk a little bit about the training you had to do for the film; I'm sure it was intense.

The training was super intense. We had this amazing stunt team, 87Eleven, those guys blew my mind. Their storytelling as stunt coordinators is amazing. We had this great training facility in Brooklyn and we were sweating it out there in the summer. And then of course to do it all again once we had the costumes on was a whole other thing, because there's only so high you can kick with these leather fight pants.

Would you be a good crime-fighting vigilante?

Absolutely! I'll sneak up on people all the time and they'll freak out and say, "How did you get there?" I'm very stealthy. I'm small and fast. I grew up taking Taekwondo and my sisters and dad and I all got our black belts together, it was kind of our family bonding, fighting each other in the dojo.

You could kick someone's butt if you had to.

I could! People should be terrified of me.

Not a bad skill set to have. What's it like working with the guys when they're in those motion-capture suits? Does it take a little getting used to?

It was a huge adjustment just because your tendency is to look them in the eye, but you forget they're three feet taller than that. It was my first experience working with mo-cap and the whole thing just felt like a play.

Would you want to get into one of those contraptions one day?

I hear they're a little uncomfortable, but yes I would. I would love to do a video game, I think that would be awesome. I have a lot of girlfriends who do that, and it's so much fun. It was just be cool to walk around with those little foam balls attached to you all day long. But when you have to take a bathroom break, it's kind of annoying.

What do you do in your free time?

I am writing a lot with my sisters, we just launched our production company last year and we're writing our own material and we're focusing on hiring a lot of females in front of and behind the camera. We've always worked really well together, my sisters and I, so we thought it was time to bring in all these creative, strong, hilarious women we know and make some stuff together.

So your sisters are in the industry as well?

They're both in the industry. My little sister is a writer and my younger sister is an actress as well. We all live within six blocks of each other. We're an incredibly codependent family. [Laughs]

What else do you have coming up aside from Turtles?

Well, the pilot I did just got passed over. I thought it was hilarious. Even more reason to be creating your own content. We're shooting a teaser for the show we're working on called The Sisters Ishibashi and it's a show inspired by our experiences growing up in an Asian American showbiz family. It's the Asian Partridge Family. Other than that I'm looking forward to a vacation in the next couple months.

Sounds great! Thank you very much for your time today.

Thanks, Eric! Appreciate it!
