Hot or Not: Renee Zellweger

09.13.2016by: Cherry Liquor

There weren't many of you who had words last week for Annabeth Gish, although I'm not sure if it's because the readers are too young to remember her at the start of career and compare it to more recent years or because there isn't a lot to say regarding her cougar hotness. I'm still giving her a passing grade. This week, the third in a line of movies about a British ne'er-do-well, BRIDGET JONES'S BABY is bringing up the questions about its star's former glory. Does she still have enough juice in the tank for a thumbs up from you guys? I'm willing to chance the scathing remarks if you are.

Renee Zellweger

I should start by explaining that I have heard all of the complaints about how unfair and sexist it is to judge Renee Zellweger's aging process in a manner that would never occur with a male counterpart and to some degree, I agree with a few of the sentiments. It's unfair to look back on the glowing Southern blonde who was so full of verve back in the '90's that she left little room to do wrong in the eyes of her fans. The young Renee was so spirited and yet embraceable in a way that another feisty blonde (Reese Witherspoon) of her generation was edgy and prickly. You wanted to be Jerry Maguire and save this woman. Hell, even when she was wielding a gun (LOVE & A .45 is still one of my top favorite cult movies of all time) or being a juicy little tart (I question the sanity of those who don't like EMPIRE RECORDS).

That said, I also want to point out that the first image of Renee was a polished one from 2000, right before she gained the weight to play Bridget the first time. This one is from her polished 2016 Vogue shoot, clearly touched up as they do. While I agree that Renee has gotten older and not aged as well as some are lucky to, due to genetics, plastic surgery overkill and the gaining and losing of significant amounts of weight numerous times, she doesn't look bad by any means. She looks like a typical, average, 47-year old American woman. One who probably smoked, got a little too much sun and generally lived a life. I don't know if it's the money or the fame that makes her aging such an unforgivable slight against movie lovers, but overall, I feel the complaints are unduly harsh.

High points for me? Zellweger has always had a phenomenal set of legs. She's bubbly and fresh while never being rude or sharing her dirty laundry. She's dated men from Bradley Cooper to Jack White to Kenny Chesney (the last of whom she was briefly married to), so her interests and personality are intriguingly varied. Renee has always come off as a bit awkward, like a water buffalo who was born in a gazelle's body; too big for the tiny package and stumbling a bit with movements & expression. I've always liked her as an actress but my answer to the "hot or not" question would have varied depending on what time I was asked. While I might not find her attractive now, the way Renee carried herself in those younger years, before the A-list seemed to smother her flame, was a scorching hot time for her. By the time the first BRIDGET JONES'S DIARY was released, I found her charming but not really hot anymore. I still like her and continue to enjoy her acting. In fact, I can't wait to see what she does in her 60's, a time that I anticipate her getting over the public's opinion of her and letting that crazy creature inside of her go nuts once more.

What do you think of Renee Zellweger?
