Hot or Not: Mae Whitman

02.17.2015by: Cherry Liquor

I don't know why I expected a bigger response for last week, when Rita Ora and her hotness was up for debate. Majority said hot but I think I was more interested to hear from the dissenting voices. But it's not about what I want. Based on the poll from our main site, what you guys want is to see THE DUFF, after you're done with JUPITER ASCENDING (which I think we all are... done, that is). This was surprising to me, since the film is based on a great YA novel by Kody Keplinger and we all know that YA movie adaptations are often huge misses when they're not starring Jennifer Lawrence. Here's the star of that film, it's time to decide if you think she's the designated ugly fat friend.

Mae Whitman

We've been watching Mae Whitman grow up since the late 1990's, when she was cast as Sandra Bullock's daughter in HOPE FLOATS and George Clooney's daughter in ONE FINE DAY, shrieking her way through scenes like a seasoned pro at such a young age. Her mother is Pat Musick, a long-time voice recording artist, so Mae's also been our April O'Neil, Tinker Bell and Katara, not to mention all those random "Family Guy" characters she's breathed life into. At 26-years old, she's been with us in some way, shape or sound for the past couple of decades.

It's easiest for me to remember Whitman in her flashier roles, especially that of Roxy Richter, the ninja-master female ex of Ramona Flowers in SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD. Not to dwell too much on one of my favorite cultish classics, Mae also did a fantastic turn in THE PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER, as that girl from high school who thrust herself upon a guy to gain a boyfriend, something all of us could relate to all too well.

I think it's unfair to refer to Whitman as fat, she's always had a round face and while she was plumper in former years, that was during her awkward teenage phase that most of us go through but without the spotlight on us like it was on her. She's also "pretty-ish" and "approachable," a couple of terms used frequently to give backhanded compliments that really mean so much more than that. Honestly, I never thought of Mae as hot until she was Roxy and now I just find all of the things that set her apart from standard Hollywood super sexy. Deeper than simple aesthetic beauty, absolutely.
