Britney Spears & Rihanna put their asses centerstage at the 2016 VMAs

08.30.2016by: No Cool Handle

Ask any insider and they'll tell you, the music industry became a less lucrative business because of Napster's becoming – and pretty much any form of digital distribution henceforth brought those profit margins down. Ask any real music fan and they'll say the reason behind this decline was because of the proliferation of pop music – in the late 90s, early 2000's – skewered towards tweens, that has since dominated the mainstream music scene. Backstreet Boys, Christina Aguilera, Jessica Simpson and Britney Spears, heralded the dawn of shit music and made it popular beyond all imagining. Those same folks may even say her particular brand of nasally noise created a template for greedy music executives to follow, and thusly, assembly-line music was now the norm. Hooks and a shit-ton of over choreographed backup dancers became the formula of which to follow; actual instruments, lyrical poetry and rhythmic syntax became something of a luxury.

The once queen of pop hit the stage during the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards, set out to remind younger successors like Ariana Grande and Rihanna who paved the way for these enduring types of putrid performances. All is not lost; if anything the over sexualized aspect of said performances – with an emphasis on as much skin and booty as can be shown on television – is a positive byproduct. Take a look at the facedown, ass up choreography showcased in Britney Spears' performance, or the pink crotch shots and booty-baring mating dance in these Rihanna pics, and you'll get the idea. Ironically, the music play second fiddle to instilling marketable fantasy girls in the minds of the young masses. In many ways these still images are superior to the videos this awards ceremony is celebrating – you can't hear a still image.
